Creating quality resources: Getting creative in HELIX's Studio 2

Putu Sita is an Assistant Learning Technologist in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. She is also a member of the working group for the JISC Discovery Tool, a self-assessment questionnaire which helps students and staff understand their digital skills, and offers guidance and resources for development. 

In July 2023, the working group met in HELIX to create audio and video tutorials for using the Discovery Tool. We caught up with Sita to find out how the project went...

  • Location: Studio 2, HELIX
  • Aims: To film and record a series of video and audio resources for students using the JISC Discovery Tool, including screencasts and a podcast offering step-by-step tutorials for students and staff. 
  • Outputs: Six high-quality multimedia resources were created, including 3 podcasts and 3 videos.
  • Impact: Resources will be hosted on the library website for staff and students across the University to better understand the benefits of the JISC Discovery Tool, and how to use it. 

Why did you choose HELIX for your project?

Having HELIX on campus is incredibly exciting for us as learning technologists! It provides us with a dedicated space and platform for lots of different types of educational activities, and it really simplifies access to equipment, like podcasting booths and studios, which makes it easier for us to support academic projects.

Checking availability and booking the studio was also quick and easy, which made scheduling with the other group members straightforward.

How did working in HELIX you to achieve your aims?

In previous projects, I've seen how restricted access to equipment and resources can cause delays. Having a dedicated creative workspace in HELIX enabled us to reduce our set up time on the day, so we could focus on creating great content.

Having immediate access to recording equipment and HELIX's on-site technician meant that the quality of resources we created was extremely high, and we know that high-quality resources result in a better educational experience for students.

Do you have any advice to share from your HELIX experience?

When you're recording a podcast, don't forget to ask around for help through HELIX. They have a lot of resources and expertise that can assist you for your best experience.
