Sebastian Stroud is a final year PhD student within the Faculty of Biological Sciences. He also sits on the British Ecological Society's Teaching and Learning Special Interest Group. In September 2023, Sebastian was invited to HELIX to test out the 3D printers...

  • Location: HELIX Makerspace 3D printed bug
  • Aims: Test out 3D printing equipment to identify and troubleshoot potential user error.
  • Output: Sebastian created a variety of 3D printed objects (including Dungeons and Dragons figurines!) whilst also exploring gamification methods for teaching
  • Impact: HELIX Technologist Josh Gregg and Sebastian documented 3D printing challenges to design a smoother more seamless experience for future first-time users. Watch the Bambu Lab X1 Series 3D printer in action!

Why did you choose HELIX for your project?

“The great thing about HELIX is that you are encouraged to play around, and be creative. I was able to delve into different teaching styles and the gamification of teaching, but also indulge some of my own hobbies and create some Dungeons and Dragons figures in the process!”

How did working in HELIX help you achieve your aims?

“We developed a comprehensive understanding of 3D printing process, and we worked out what people could get tripped up on. Taking into consideration how the average student would come into the process, we identified how they would need to be supported with things like preparing and removing the plates. Thankfully, the printers are already optimised for use, and there are quick guides that can be accessed via the QR codes on the side of the machines."

Do you have any advice to share from your HELIX experience?

“The staff are incredibly helpful. Feel free to go and speak to them. My advice would be to be patient, enjoy playing around with the resources and technologies in HELIX and becoming a part of the community.”
