Critical Digital Practice Module at HELIX’s Makerspace
Joanne Armitage is an Associate Professor in Critical Digital Practice at the University of Leeds's School of Media and Communication. She has taught digital thinking around technology for many years, focusing on how creative engagement can help reimagine our relationship with technology. Alongside her departmental colleagues in the digital media team, Joanne has been using the HELIX Makerspace to develop approaches that integrate material experimentation and critical perspectives into teaching.
Location: HELIX Makerspace
Aims: Equip students with practical digital skills through hands-on making and encourage critical reflection on how technologies shape and are shaped by human experience. Exploring alternative ways of engaging with technology and help students feel comfortable experimenting, failing, and iterating as part of the learning process.
Output: Delivering a range of creative workshops such as the Arduino Sensor Workshop, Lego Prototyping, and Wearable Tech Workshop.
Why did you choose HELIX for your project?
“I have been delivering my teaching at HELIX since the centre opened in 2023. The Makerspace environment is the fresh air I needed to do my work. HELIX’s collaborative environment allows me to bring my ideas to life, and I always encourage students to visit and use the facilities outside of scheduled teaching.”
How did working at HELIX help you achieve your aims?
“Using the equipment at HELIX, my students have gained hands-on technical skills with accessible tools and materials, developed creative problem-solving through trial and error, and engaged in critical reflection about the role and biases of technology. They’ve also reported that they feel comfortable experimenting in the HELIX space and are now more confident in pursuing creative projects.”
What's next?
“HELIX is a rare space at the University where I feel my abilities are fully valued and supported. I plan to continue running my modules at HELIX and integrate more collaborative opportunities.
I’m also looking forward to connecting my partners- Espacio Nixso (Argentina), MedialabMX (Mexico City), and Space2 (Leeds)-with HELIX to create new collaborative teaching and research opportunities.”
