HELIX refurbishment enhances access and collaboration
HELIX, the University’s learning innovation hub for students, staff and the local community, has been refurbished to make it even easier for everyone to work on innovative projects in the heart of the University campus.
Thanks to input and feedback from our community, I'm excited to unveil the latest enhancements to our on-campus innovation facility HELIX. These enhancements will make our space more accessible, make it quicker and easier for you to experiment with innovative technology, and generally build on the vibe and atmosphere which makes HELIX so special.

Truly hybrid teaching spaces
Three teaching spaces, including the main HELIX classroom, the Makerspace, and the XR space, now offer enhanced multimode technology so classes can be delivered in-person and online simultaneously.
Improved live-streaming tools, including motion-tracking cameras and perimeter microphones, will give online students a better sense of what it is happening in the room.
New multimode screens with touch screen functionality will also allow educators to facilitate collaboration between in-person and online students, ensuring that participants feel more connected wherever they are joining from.

A place to learn and work in comfort
Alongside technical improvements, the HELIX team has responded to feedback to make the space more accessible and welcoming for all users.
Power-assisted, push-button automatic doors have been introduced throughout the facility to support users with access requirements.
The refurbishment also includes updated kitchen facilities, featuring instant hot water access and cupboard space.
More comfortable seating options, including bean bags, are also now available.
Now accessible 24/7 with an access card
Access cards can be booked online and must be collected before 4pm. If you require access to 3D filament printers, media studios (Studio 2) or self-recording/podcast facilities, you will also need to book an additional access card for these areas.
As a Leeds Art and Design student and intern, I run creative workshops in the HELIX Makerspace and XR room.
I’m most excited to use the new multimode screens to enhance my lessons, possibly with online participants. I'm also impressed with HELIX's increased accessibility through the new automatic doors. I use HELIX every day, so the refurbished kitchen and comfortable beanbags will be a bonus!
