Top of the table for online courses

Date

The University of Leeds has ranked first among 62 competing institutions for the quality of our online courses to support students, teachers and professionals impacted during the coronavirus pandemic.

MoocLab, an education resource supporting online learners, compiled the table of universities offering massive open online courses (MOOCs). Providing free or low-cost education to people who cannot afford or get access to traditional learning, MOOCs have taken on even more importance following the outbreak of covid-19.

The University of Leeds outperformed all of the 62 reviewed universities by offering free course certificates with 15 of their open online courses. Leeds currently offers 80 MOOCs across both FutureLearn and Coursera, as well as 10 course programs, 3 of which grant credit.

Professor Neil Morris, Dean of Digital Education at the University said:

“We are very pleased that our MOOCs have helped so many students, teachers and professionals impacted by the pandemic, and to be recognised internationally as an excellent provider is a testament to the hard work of everyone involved in creating and delivering these courses.

The Digital Education Service at the University of Leeds has long recognised the need to support individuals around the globe to develop new knowledge and skills to meet the societal and economic challenges facing us.

We are proud to have worked with a wide range of external partners to develop these courses for delivery on the FutureLearn and Coursera platforms.”

The University’s exceptional range of online courses has recently expanded to include support for anyone adapting to the huge changes to the way we live, work and study during the coronavirus pandemic. With our broad offering, students can feel confident getting the most out of digital learning, with courses like Preparing to Learn Online at University, while professionals can prepare to thrive in a digital environment by delving into Collaborative Working in a Remote Team or How to Create Great Online Content.

In recent months, staff and students alike have taken great steps to adapt to ways of teaching, learning, and working online. However, the University’s expertise in online learning is not new, having also offered 4 courses in the top 30 of Class Central’s Best Online Courses of 2019.

Online learning has a key role to play in providing equal opportunities to learners all over the world, which is why the Digital Education Service is incredibly proud to see Leeds emerge at the top of the table for online courses with MoocLab.
